What it treats

Swelling and lymphatic conditions

  • Lymphedema — including after surgery involving lymph node removal, resulting in swelling of the arms or legs
  • General fluid retention and swelling (edema) of all types
  • Skin protection for fragile or at-risk skin, helping prevent bruising and skin tears

Skin and vascular conditions

  • Venous insufficiency, a condition where the veins of the lower extremity cannot return blood to the heart
  • Varicose veins — manages swelling and pain associated with dilated and distended veins

Wound and injury recovery

  • Enhanced healing of surgical and traumatic wounds of the extremities
  • Faster healing of bruising
  • Improved appearance of skin grafts

How it works

EdemaWear® uses a technology developed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center called Fuzzy Wale Elastic Compression (FWC). Soft, corduroy-like "wales" run along the length of the garment and press gently into the skin, creating a cornrow-like furrow where compression is high enough to be physiologically useful.

Between the wales, small areas of uncompressed skin allow healthy lymphatic vessels to remain open and functional. These zero-pressure zones are believed to enhance lymphatic drainage from the compressed skin furrows, encouraging fluid to move back toward the heart.

Unlike traditional compression garments — which act as a uniform tourniquet around the limb — EdemaWear's alternating compression and relief pattern works with the lymphatic system and are lighter and more comfortable to wear than regular compression garments, while still being effective. EdemaWear is also the perfect choice for air travel.

How to put it on

  • Roll the stocking like a sock, place it onto the foot or hand, then unroll it up toward the body.
  • For painful or very swollen limbs, place a plastic bag over the foot or hand first. Pull EdemaWear over the bag, remove the bag, then draw the garment down into place.
  • EdemaWear can be cut to the length you need — it will not unravel.
  • To prevent it from rolling down, fold the top edge over to create a 3" cuff. It can also be worn inside out.
  • If wearing socks, put them on over EdemaWear — the garment should always be in direct contact with the skin.

Care instructions

  • Hand wash or machine wash in cold water and hang to dry.
  • Bloodstains can be removed with hydrogen peroxide.
  • With daily use, EdemaWear typically lasts 4–6 months, and may last longer in non-ambulatory patients.
  • Remove daily for bathing and repositioning.

What clients often notice

  • A sense of comfort and relief at the skin level
  • Reduced feeling of heaviness or inflammation in the limb
  • Visible reduction in swelling with regular use
  • Improved skin condition in areas affected by venous insufficiency

Lymphatic Drainage Session

Post-Mastectomy Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Gentle, Supportive Care After Breast Cancer Surgery

Undergoing a mastectomy — whether recent or years ago — is a deeply personal experience. Your body has been through a lot. Healing doesn’t end once the incision closes.

I offer compassionate, specialized Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for women beginning as early as two weeks post-surgery, and also for those who had surgery months or even years ago and are still experiencing discomfort, tightness, swelling, or scar-related restrictions

When Can You Start?

Many women are surprised to learn that lymphatic work can begin as early as two weeks after surgery, once cleared by your surgeon.

Receiving MLD in the early stages can:

  • Support the natural healing process

  • Help reduce post-surgical swelling

  • Minimize the development of fibrosis

  • Improve scar mobility

  • Encourage healthy lymphatic circulation

Early intervention can make a meaningful difference in long-term tissue health.

That said, it is never “too late.” Even if your mastectomy was years ago, MLD and gentle lymphatic drainage and fascial work can still improve comfort, mobility, and tissue softness.

Common Post-Mastectomy Concerns

After breast cancer surgery — and sometimes chemotherapy or radiation — women may experience:

  • Restricted shoulder and arm mobility

  • Tightness across the chest or ribcage

  • Scar tissue and fibrosis

  • Axillary cording (tight, rope-like bands under the skin)

  • Swelling in the arm, breast, or trunk

  • Lymphedema

My approach is designed to gently address these concerns while supporting your overall well-being.

Lymphedema Support

When lymph nodes are removed or radiated, the lymphatic system may struggle to transport fluid efficiently.

Lymphedema is often a chronic condition — but it can be managed effectively.

Support may include:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT), when appropriate

  • Compression garment guidance

  • Limb measurements to track changes in volume

  • Education on skin care and self-management

  • Decongestive and breathing exercises

  • Self-massage instruction

In cases where swelling is more significant, a structured reduction phase using compression bandaging may be recommended before transitioning to maintenance care.

Follow-up appointments help ensure swelling remains stable and compression remains appropriate.

Techniques That May Be Used

Depending on your needs, your personalized treatment plan may include:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Scar and fibrosis mobilization

  • Gentle fascial work for shoulder, neck, and chest tension

  • Education and self-care guidance

Every session is adapted to your stage of healing, energy level, and comfort.

A Personalized Approach

Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment and your initial treatment. From there, we create a plan specifically to you.

Therapy frequency and duration vary depending on:

  • Whether you are early post-operative or years post-surgery

  • The presence and stage of lymphedema

  • Scar mobility and fibrosis

  • Your personal healing goals

You Deserve Gentle, Skilled Support

Healing after mastectomy is not just physical — it is emotional, too.

My treatment space is one of safety, respect, and compassion, whether you are two weeks post-surgery or ten years post-mastectomy.
